The snow fell silently over Valley Forge. It covered the frozen ground like a cold, heavy blanket. Inside the rough wooden huts, soldiers huddled together for warmth. Many had no boots. Many had no coats. Their feet left red footprints in the snow. It was the winter of 1777, and General George Washington was worried. He walked through the camp each day, stopping to speak with his men. He looked into their tired eyes. He shook their trembling hands. He thanked them for staying. Many had gone home. He understood. But these men had stayed, and that meant everything. One evening, Washington left his quarters alone. He walked deep into the woods beyond the camp. The pine trees stood tall and still around him. The wind had stopped. The only sound was the soft crunch of his boots in the snow. Washington knelt down beside a fallen log. He removed his hat and bowed his head. He began to pray. He prayed for his soldiers. He prayed for their families waiting back home. He prayed for the new nation, so young and so fragile, like a candle flame in a great storm. He asked God to give him wisdom. He asked for strength he did not feel. He asked, with his whole heart, that this cause would not be forgotten. A Quaker farmer named Isaac Potts lived nearby. He was walking through the woods that same evening when he heard a voice. He stopped and listened. Through the trees, he saw the tall figure of the General, kneeling in the snow, speaking quietly to God. Isaac Potts stood very still. He did not make a sound. When Washington finished and rose to his feet, Isaac slipped away quietly through the trees. That night, Isaac went home and told his wife what he had seen. His voice was full of wonder. He said he had never witnessed anything so moving in all his life. He said he knew, somehow, that God had heard that prayer. Back in the camp, Washington returned to his men. He did not tell them what he had done in the woods. He simply smiled, stood tall, and kept working. He wrote letters. He made plans. He asked for supplies. He refused to give up. And slowly, slowly, things began to change. A general named Friedrich von Steuben arrived from far away. He did not speak much English, but he knew how to train soldiers. Every morning, he marched the men through drills. He taught them to march together, to load their rifles quickly, to stand firm under fire. He made the men laugh. He made them proud. Food arrived. Coats arrived. Boots arrived. The sick men grew stronger. The cold began to lift. By spring, the army at Valley Forge had become something new. They were not the same ragged band who had shivered through that long winter. They were soldiers. They were ready. Washington stood before them on a bright April morning. The trees were green again. Birds were singing in the branches overhead. He looked out at the rows of men standing straight and tall. He thought about that night in the woods. He thought about his prayer in the snow. He thought about how dark everything had seemed, and how the light had come back anyway. Faith, he believed, was not about knowing how things would turn out. Faith was about trusting, even in the dark, that your steps were being guided. The men cheered. The drums began to beat. The flag rose up into the blue sky. And somewhere in the woods beyond the camp, the pine trees stood tall and quiet, keeping their gentle secret. That is how a nation learned that courage does not always roar. Sometimes it kneels in the snow and whispers a prayer, and waits for morning to come.
