Corrie ten Boom finds light in the darkest place on earth.
Read Along — Story Text
The barracks smelled of damp straw and cold stone. Women huddled together in the dark, far from home, far from everything they loved. One of them was Corrie ten Boom, a watchmaker's daughter from Holland.
Corrie had been caught hiding Jewish neighbors in her home. The Nazis sent her to Ravensbrück, a prison camp in Germany. She was fifty-two years old. She was afraid. But she carried something the guards had not found — a small, worn Bible tucked beneath her dress.
Every night, Corrie gathered the women in her barrack around that Bible. She read to them in Dutch, in German, in whispers. The words fell like warm light into a very cold room. Even the fleas that bit them could not stop them from praying together.
One of the guards hated Corrie. He sneered at her. He called her faith foolish. One night, Corrie looked at him and felt something surprising rise in her chest. Not anger. Pity. She prayed for him, quietly, before she closed her eyes.
Her sister Betsie lay sick beside her. Betsie smiled even when she could barely lift her head. She told Corrie, "We must tell them there is no pit so deep that God is not deeper still."
Betsie did not survive the camp. Corrie grieved. But she carried her sister's words like a lantern.
Corrie ten Boom was released on a paperwork error, just days before she would have been killed. She spent the rest of her long life traveling the world, telling her story.
She never stopped believing. She never stopped forgiving. And every child who hears her name learns the same quiet lesson: even in the darkest night, a small flame of faith can light the whole room.
