Everyone knew Eric Liddell could run. He ran like the wind itself was cheering him on. In 1924, he won an Olympic gold medal in Paris, and all of Scotland celebrated.
But Eric believed God had made him for more than winning races.
He sailed to China to teach and serve. He married, had children, and laughed easily. He helped farmers, students, and anyone who knocked on his door. Life was full and good.
Then war came. Japanese soldiers swept across China. Families fled. Eric sent his wife and daughters to safety in Canada. He kissed them goodbye at the dock, not knowing when he would see them again.
Soldiers came for him next. They marched him and hundreds of others into a crowded camp called Weihsien. The walls were high. The food was thin. The winters bit hard.
But Eric did not grow bitter. He organized games so children could play. He tutored teenagers in algebra and science. He shared his small rations with neighbors who had even less. Every morning, before the camp stirred, he knelt beside his cot and prayed.
Other prisoners watched him. Some asked, how can you smile in a place like this?
Eric would look up and say, quietly, I have everything I need.
He never stopped giving. Even when his body grew weak and his health slipped away, he kept teaching, kept praying, kept encouraging the frightened children who ran to him.
Eric Liddell died inside that camp in February 1945, just months before the war ended. He was only forty-three years old.
But the people he loved remembered. They said he had run the longest race of all, not on a track, but through every hard and holy day. And he had never stopped running toward the light.
