The wind hit the Nebraska prairie like a hammer that January night in 1869. Snow came sideways, stinging and white, burying fence posts and freezing the ruts in the road solid as iron. Eli Wheeler pulled his coat tighter and leaned into his horse. He was a circuit preacher — one of those brave men who rode hundreds of miles alone, bringing Sunday worship to settlers so scattered across the frontier that they might not see another soul for weeks at a time. Tonight he had twelve families waiting in a half-built sod chapel near the Platte River. He had promised them. His horse stumbled. The drifts were past the animal's knees now. Any sensible man would have turned back. But Eli thought of young Thomas Hecker, a boy of eight whose father had died of fever the autumn before. Thomas's mother had written Eli a letter with shaking hands. My boy needs to hear that God has not forgotten us out here. Please come. Eli closed his eyes against the wind and prayed aloud, his words torn away the moment they left his lips. Lord, if it be Your will, let me finish what I started. He rode on. When he finally pushed open the chapel door, snow avalanching off his shoulders, twelve families rose to their feet. Candles flickered in tin holders nailed to raw sod walls. The room smelled of pine smoke and wet wool. Thomas Hecker ran forward and grabbed Eli's frozen hand with both of his. You came, the boy whispered. I promised, Eli said simply. That night on the frozen prairie, forty-one voices sang a hymn so loud the rafters shook. Outside, the blizzard howled. Inside, it was warm. Faith, Eli always said, is what keeps the light burning when everything outside goes dark.
