Once upon a time, in a little town tucked between rolling green hills and a wide, shining river, there lived a girl named Marigold. She had copper-colored braids, muddy boots, and a heart full of questions.
One evening, just as the fireflies were beginning to blink their soft gold lights across the meadow, Marigold climbed up to her favorite spot — the old wooden porch swing that creaked and swayed like a rocking boat. She pulled a small, worn flag from her pocket, the kind they handed out at the Fourth of July parade every year.
She studied it carefully, counting the stripes with her finger. Red, white, red, white.
"Grandpa Joe," she called through the screen door, "why do we have so many stars on our flag?"
The door swung open with a long, slow squeak, and out stepped Grandpa Joe, tall and warm, smelling of pine wood and fresh cornbread. He settled into the swing beside her, and it groaned happily under their weight.
"Well now," he said, his voice slow and gentle as the river below, "every one of those stars stands for a state, and every state is like a member of one big family."
Marigold looked at the stars again. Fifty of them, bright and brave. "That's a big family," she said quietly.
"The biggest," Grandpa Joe agreed. He pointed out toward the darkening hills, where lights were beginning to glow in farmhouse windows up and down the valley. "See those lights, Marigold? Every single one of those is somebody's home. Somebody who loves someone, works hard for something, and hopes for tomorrow."
Marigold leaned her head against his arm. The fireflies drifted up around the porch railing like tiny, wandering stars fallen down to visit.
"Tell me more," she whispered.
