Read Along — Story Text
The year was 1869, and a young man named John Muir stood at the edge of California's Sierra Nevada mountains. He had no grand army behind him. No wagon train. No guide. Just a worn notebook, a crust of bread, and a heart full of wonder.
John had worked hard all his life. He grew up on a Wisconsin farm where his father drove him to labor from sunup to sundown. But something in John always looked toward the horizon. He dreamed of mountains the way other men dreamed of gold.
Now, at thirty-one, he finally walked into them.
The Sierra was wild and steep and cold at night. The trails vanished into nothing. Granite cliffs rose like cathedral walls. Waterfalls thundered down from snowfields so bright they hurt his eyes.
One afternoon, a sudden storm rolled across the peaks. Lightning cracked the sky. Most men would have run. John climbed higher. He scrambled up a tall pine tree and clung to the swaying branches, laughing with joy as the wind bent the whole forest around him. He wanted to feel every inch of the storm.
He wrote in his notebook every night by firelight. He wrote about towering sequoias older than any city in America. He wrote about glaciers, about bears, about meadows so green they glowed.
But John Muir did not just love the wilderness for himself. He wanted everyone to see it. He talked and wrote and pleaded until the government listened. In 1890, Yosemite became a national park, protected forever.
John Muir taught America something the frontier had nearly forgotten: that wild land was worth more than anything you could cut down or dig up. Some things are worth saving. Some things belong to all of us.
