Nellie Cashman crosses frozen wilderness to save stranded miners in 1874.
Read Along — Story Text
The winter of 1874 swallowed the Cassiar Mountains whole. Snow piled higher than a man's head. The wind cut like a knife. And deep in those frozen peaks of British Columbia, nearly eighty miners lay sick and dying.
Their only hope was a small Irish woman with iron in her heart.
Nellie Cashman had already crossed half of North America chasing gold. She had cooked for miners, nursed the sick, and prayed over the lost. When word reached Victoria that the men of Cassiar were starving and scurvy was taking them one by one, everyone said rescuing them was impossible.
Nellie said, Then I had better leave now.
She gathered six brave men and loaded a sled with five hundred pounds of food and medicine. The trail climbed into blinding white. Ice cracked beneath their boots. Temperatures dropped so low that breath froze before it left their lips. Two of her companions begged to turn back.
Nellie kept walking.
After twenty-two brutal days, she pushed through the last snowdrift and stumbled into the mining camp. The men inside looked up with hollow eyes. Some could barely lift their heads.
But Nellie was already unpacking the limes and the medicine, already heating water, already telling them stories to make them laugh.
Within weeks, every last miner recovered. They called her the Angel of the Cassiar. She never much liked the name. She thought she was just doing what needed doing.
But the miners remembered. They always remembered the small woman who walked through a frozen mountain winter because she believed no person should be left behind.
America has always needed people like Nellie Cashman. People who see an impossible road and decide to walk it anyway.
