The sky was clear that January morning. Clara Hoffstead stepped outside her family's sod house on the Nebraska plain and breathed in the cold, bright air. She was eleven years old, and she loved mornings like this — still and wide and free. Then she saw it. Far to the northwest, a wall of white. It rolled across the flat land like a wave, swallowing everything in its path. The wind arrived first, sharp as a knife. Then the snow came screaming. Her father was in town for supplies. Her mother had walked to the neighbor's farm, half a mile away. Clara was alone. She knew what to do. Her father had told her a hundred times. She ran to the barn and tied a rope from the door to the fence post, then from the fence post to the house. If she lost that rope in the whiteout, she could wander in circles until she froze. The animals needed water. Clara filled the trough, her fingers burning in the cold. The cow pressed her warm side against the girl, as if to say thank you. Hours passed. The storm howled and shook the walls. Clara wrapped herself in every quilt she could find and prayed out loud, the way her mother always did. She kept the stove fed with dried corn cobs, one handful at a time. When the storm finally calmed, her father burst through the door, his beard thick with ice and his eyes full of fear. He found Clara at the table, a candle burning steady, soup warming on the stove. He pulled her close and could not speak for a long moment. Finally he whispered, "You did everything right, my girl. Everything right." And on the wide, white, silent prairie, that was enough.
