The year was 1889, and a young woman named Nellie Bly had a wild idea. She walked into her editor's office in New York City and said, "I want to travel around the entire world — faster than anyone ever has."
Her editor laughed. "That's a job for a man," he said.
Nellie did not flinch. "Then send a man," she said calmly, "and I will start the same day for a rival paper — and beat him."
He sent Nellie.
On November 14th, she stepped onto a steamship with one small bag. She had packed only what she could carry herself — a single dress, a coat, and a notebook. The sea was rough and cold. The ship groaned and rolled. Nellie gripped the railing and wrote in her notebook anyway.
She crossed the Atlantic, raced through England, sped across France, and sailed through the Suez Canal under blazing desert sun. In Japan she bought a little monkey and named him McGinty. He rode in her bag the rest of the way.
In every port, telegraph wires carried her stories back to America. Readers followed every mile. Children checked maps before school. Entire cities held their breath.
Then a fierce storm hit the Pacific. The ship pitched and heaved for days. Nellie stood on deck in the howling wind, eyes forward, jaw set. She had come too far to stop now.
On January 25th, 1890, Nellie Bly stepped off the train in New York City. Cannons boomed. Crowds roared. Church bells rang across the harbor.
She had circled the world in seventy-two days, six hours, and eleven minutes — faster than anyone in history.
Nellie put her notebook away and smiled. She had always known one thing: courage carries you farther than any ship ever could.
