Read Along — Story Text
The sun was high and burning when the guns began to roar. It was June of 1876, and the hills of Montana Territory trembled with the thunder of horses. General Crook had led nearly a thousand soldiers against the Cheyenne and Lakota people along Rosebud Creek. The battle had raged all morning, gunsmoke drifting like fog through the tall summer grass. Buffalo Calf Road Woman was there. She was young, strong, and brave beyond measure. She had ridden out that morning with her husband, Black Coyote, because she would not let her people face danger alone. Then she saw him. Her brother, Comes In Sight, had charged too far into the soldiers' line. His horse was shot out from under him. He scrambled to his feet in the open field, soldiers closing in from every side. There was nowhere to run. There was no escape. Buffalo Calf Road Woman did not hesitate for even a single breath. She kicked her pony hard and galloped straight into the storm of bullets, hooves pounding the dry earth like a drumbeat. Smoke and dust swirled all around her. Soldiers shouted. Rifles cracked like lightning. She reached her brother, stretched out her arm, and pulled him up behind her in one swift motion. Then she turned that brave pony and rode like the wind back to safety. The warriors who watched that day never forgot what they saw. They would call the Battle of the Rosebud by another name ever after: The Battle Where the Girl Saved Her Brother. Buffalo Calf Road Woman showed the world that courage is not about being fearless. It is about loving someone enough to ride through the fire anyway. And on the frontier, that kind of love was the bravest thing of all.
