Mary Edwards Walker's journey home from war
Read Along — Story Text
In the midst of the Civil War, Doctor Mary Edwards Walker traveled from camp to camp, tending to wounded soldiers. One day, she received a letter from her family, saying they needed her help back home in Oswego, New York. Mary packed her bag and set off on the long journey. As she rode her horse through the rolling hills and dense forests, she encountered many challenges. The roads were muddy, the weather was cold, and she was all alone. But Mary was not one to give up easily. She had seen the worst of war and had helped heal countless soldiers. A little rain and mud wouldn't stop her from getting home to her family. As she rode, the wind began to howl, and the sky grew dark. Mary quickened her pace, but soon she came to a swollen river. The bridge had been washed away, and she couldn't cross. Just as she was wondering what to do, a kind stranger appeared. 'Let me help you, Doctor,' he said. Together, they found a shallow spot, and Mary led her horse across the river. On the other side, she thanked the stranger and continued her journey. As the sun began to set, Mary saw the lights of her hometown in the distance. She rode into town, tired but triumphant, and was greeted with open arms by her family. They were so proud of her bravery and selflessness. Mary had shown them that even in the darkest times, kindness and perseverance can prevail. And from that day on, Mary continued to inspire her community with her courage and compassion.
As Mary settled back into her family's home, she couldn't shake the feeling that there was still more work to be done. She had seen the devastation of war, and she knew that many others were struggling to rebuild their lives. Mary's mother, noticing her daughter's restlessness, suggested that she visit the local veterans' hospital. "They could use your skills, dear," she said. Mary agreed, and the next morning, she set off to visit the hospital. As she walked through the wards, she was greeted by the familiar sight of wounded soldiers, their faces pale and worn. Mary's heart went out to them, and she quickly got to work, tending to their wounds and listening to their stories. One soldier in particular caught her attention. His name was John, and he had lost his leg in battle. Mary could see the despair in his eyes, and she knew that she had to do something to help him. "John, I want you to know that you're not alone," she said, taking his hand in hers. "We're going to get through this together. I'll help you learn to walk again, and I'll be here to support you every step of the way." John looked up at her, a glimmer of hope in his eyes. "Thank you, Doctor," he whispered. Mary smiled and patted his hand. "You're welcome, John. We'll get through this, together."
As the days turned into weeks, Mary and John worked tirelessly together. With every step, with every triumph, John's hope grew, and his spirit began to heal. Mary watched with pride as he learned to walk again, his determination and courage inspiring all who saw him. And as John finally took his first steps without aid, the entire hospital erupted in cheers and applause. Mary smiled, her heart full of joy, knowing that she had helped another soul find their way. As the sun set on another day, Mary returned home, exhausted but content. She knew that she had made a difference, and that thought filled her with peace. As she drifted off to sleep, she whispered to herself, "Even in the darkest of times, kindness and compassion can be the greatest medicine of all."
