Mary Fields was born into slavery in 1832. But Mary was a fighter. She worked hard and eventually earned her freedom. Mary moved to Montana, where she worked as a laundry woman. But Mary had bigger dreams. She wanted to be a mail carrier. It wasn't an easy job, especially for a woman. But Mary was determined. She applied to the United States Postal Service and was hired in 1895. Mary was one of the first female mail carriers in the country! Every day, Mary would load up her stagecoach and set off into the wilderness. She faced many challenges, from raging rivers to fierce storms. But Mary was brave and strong. She always delivered the mail, no matter what. The people of Montana loved Mary. They called her 'Stagecoach Mary.' Mary proved that with hard work and determination, anything is possible. She inspired generations of women to come. And she remains an American hero to this day.
