Read Along — Story Text
The cannons had fallen silent, but the suffering had not. Clara Barton stood at the edge of a muddy Virginia field in August of 1862, her dark dress already stained with the work of the day. Around her, hundreds of wounded Union soldiers lay on the bare ground, groaning softly, calling for water, calling for home. The army surgeons had bandages enough for perhaps a third of them. Clara had not waited for permission. She had spent months writing letters, knocking on doors, and loading supply wagons herself when no one else would. Men in pressed uniforms had told her, politely but firmly, that the battlefield was no place for a woman. She had listened carefully, nodded, and gone anyway. She knelt beside a young soldier from Massachusetts, no older than sixteen, his face pale as winter clouds. She pressed a damp cloth to his forehead and felt him relax, just slightly, the way a child does when someone familiar enters a dark room. "Are you afraid?" he whispered. Clara considered the question honestly. "Every single day," she said. "But I decided a long time ago that fear is not a reason to stay home. It is simply something you carry with you." The boy managed a small, tired smile. She moved on to the next soldier, and the one after that, working through the night by lantern light. A bullet once passed so close that it tore the sleeve of her dress without touching her skin. She paused for one breath, then continued bandaging a stranger's wound. Years later, people would call her the Angel of the Battlefield. Clara never much liked the title. Angels, she would say quietly, do not get mud on their boots. But heroes do. And that night, so did she.
