✍️ Written by TrueTales Editorial Team 🎙️ Narrated by John Harrison

Harriet Tubman leads freedom seekers north through the darkest night.

Read Along — Story Text
The December wind cut through the Maryland pines like a blade, and Harriet Tubman pulled her coat tighter and listened. Eight people crouched behind her in the frozen underbrush — a grandmother, two young brothers, a mother clutching an infant wrapped in burlap. They had been walking for three nights. Harriet had done this before. Nineteen times she had returned south, back into the jaws of danger, and not once had she lost a single person. But tonight felt different. The infant had begun to whimper, and somewhere behind them, a dog was barking. One of the young men leaned close. "Harriet," he whispered, his voice tight with fear, "maybe we should go back. Wait for a better night." She turned and looked at him steadily. Her eyes, people said, had seen things that changed a person forever. "There is no going back," she said quietly. "There is only forward." She had given the baby a few drops of paregoric to help it sleep — a hard choice, but a necessary one. Every decision on these journeys lived in that narrow, aching space between terrible and necessary. Harriet closed her eyes and prayed, the same way her mother had taught her back on the plantation — not aloud, but deep in her chest, like a fire that could not be extinguished. Then she stood. "Follow me," she said. "And trust." They moved through the darkness like shadows, following the North Star burning above the bare trees. By morning, they had crossed into Pennsylvania. The grandmother wept silently. The young brothers gripped each other's hands. Harriet Tubman did not weep. She was already thinking about who she would go back for next. Freedom, she knew, was never truly given. It was carried, one brave step at a time.
