Read Along — Story Text
The woods were silent except for the sound of breathing — twelve people pressed together beneath a riverbank, listening.
Harriet Tubman held up one hand. Stop. Her eyes moved through the darkness the way a hawk's do, seeing everything at once.
She was thirty-one years old, and she had already made this journey six times. Each crossing was different. Each one was dangerous. Slave catchers and their dogs patrolled the roads between Maryland and the free states of the North, and the penalty for helping freedom seekers was severe. Harriet understood this better than anyone. She had escaped once herself, alone, following the North Star through cold October fields. That night had changed her forever. She had promised she would come back.
She always kept her promises.
Behind her crouched a young man named Samuel. He was trembling — not from cold, but from fear. Earlier that evening he had whispered that he wanted to turn back. Harriet had looked at him steadily and said, quiet but firm, "You can be scared and still keep moving. That's all courage ever is."
Now she touched his shoulder. The road ahead was clear.
They moved through the forest in single file, stepping where she stepped, stopping when she stopped. The North Star glittered through the branches above them like a lantern someone had hung there on purpose. Harriet felt it was exactly that.
By sunrise, they had crossed into Pennsylvania. One of the women began to cry softly. A child looked up at the brightening sky with enormous, wondering eyes.
Harriet did not linger. There were more people waiting in Maryland. More journeys ahead.
But in that quiet morning light, she breathed in the cold free air and allowed herself one moment of gratitude — for the stars, for the road, and for every soul brave enough to follow it.
