Read Along — Story Text
The morning air smelled of damp oak leaves and bus exhaust. Ruby Bridges stood on the sidewalk outside William Frantz Elementary School, her white dress starched crisp, her shoes polished mirror-bright. She was six years old, and she had never been more frightened in her life.
Four federal marshals in gray suits flanked her as she climbed the front steps. The crowd beyond the iron fence was enormous — shouting, pressing, some holding signs with words Ruby could not yet fully read, though she felt their poison clearly enough. A woman screamed something terrible. Ruby kept her chin level and her feet moving forward.
She had practiced this walk in her mind. Her mother had told her the night before, her voice steady as river stone, that some battles were bigger than one person's fear. Ruby believed her.
Inside, most classrooms sat empty. White families had pulled their children home rather than share a classroom with a Black girl. One teacher, Barbara Henry, had come anyway. She arranged two desks side by side and smiled at Ruby as though this were the most ordinary Tuesday in the world. It was, Ruby decided, the kindest thing anyone had done for her all month.
Day after day, Ruby walked that gauntlet. She prayed on the steps each morning, asking for the strength to forgive the people who hated her. Her teacher noticed and asked about it. Ruby shrugged and said she figured they must be very unhappy inside.
By spring, a few children had returned. By the following year, the school was simply a school. Ruby had not thrown a single stone, raised a single fist, or spoken a single harsh word. Her weapon had been something far more durable: dignity.
Some doors, she learned, only open from the inside — and courage is the key.
