A brave young girl's midnight ride for freedom

Read Along — Story Text
In the dark of night, Sybil Ludington sat tall on her horse, Star. She was only 16 years old, but she was brave and strong. The British army was coming, and Sybil had to warn the American patriots. Her father, Henry, was a colonel, and he told her it was her job to ride to the next town and tell them to be ready. Sybil loved her country, and she loved her family. She knew she had to be brave. She clicked her tongue, and Star began to gallop. The wind whipped through Sybil's hair as they rode through the dark forest. She could hear the British drums beating in the distance. Sybil rode faster and faster, her heart pounding in her chest. Suddenly, a British soldier jumped out from behind a tree. 'Halt!' he shouted. But Sybil was too quick. She spurred Star on, and they galloped past the soldier. They rode for what felt like hours, the moon shining down on them. Finally, they reached the next town. Sybil shouted the warning, and the patriots scrambled to get ready. The British army arrived soon after, but they were met with brave American soldiers. The battle was fierce, but in the end, the Americans were victorious. Sybil rode back home, tired but proud. She had helped save the day. Her father hugged her tight. 'I'm so proud of you, Sybil,' he said. 'You're a true patriot.' Sybil smiled, feeling happy and free. She knew she had done something important to help her country.
