Hannah clutched her worn leather journal to her chest as she gazed out at the endless forest. She had never seen so many trees in her life! Her family had traveled for weeks to reach this spot on the Ohio River, where her pa had decided to settle their new home. Hannah's ma was busy unpacking the wagon, while her little brother, Ben, chased after a squirrel. Hannah's pa, a rugged man with a kind face, came over to her and said, 'Hannah, I need your help. I want you to go with Jebediah, the trapper, and learn how to find food for our family.' Hannah's heart skipped a beat. She had always been fascinated by Jebediah's stories of the wilderness, but she was also scared. What if she got lost? What if she couldn't find any food? Jebediah, a grizzled old man with a bushy beard, smiled at her and said, 'Don't you worry, child. I'll teach you everything I know.' Hannah took a deep breath and nodded. She followed Jebediah into the forest, her senses overwhelmed by the sights and sounds of the wild. Jebediah showed her how to identify berries, how to set traps, and how to navigate by the stars. Hannah was a quick learner, and soon she was bringing back rabbits and fish for her family's dinner. But as the days passed, the weather began to change. Dark clouds gathered on the horizon, and the wind started to pick up. Hannah's ma called her and Ben inside, just as the storm hit. The winds howled and the rain lashed down, causing the river to swell. Hannah's pa struggled to secure the wagon, but it was no use. The current was too strong, and the wagon was swept away. Hannah's ma cried out in despair, but Hannah didn't hesitate. She remembered Jebediah's words: 'In times of trouble, trust your instincts.' She grabbed a rope and plunged into the raging river, the water icy cold and chest-deep. She fought her way through the currents, her heart pounding in her chest. Finally, she reached the wagon and managed to tie the rope around it. Slowly but surely, she pulled it back to the shore. Her family cheered as she emerged from the water, shivering but triumphant. Jebediah patted her on the back and said, 'You've got the heart of a true explorer, Hannah.' From that day on, Hannah knew that she could face any challenge the wilderness threw her way.
