Ellie sat on the top step, her knees pulled up to her chest, watching fireflies blink their tiny lights above the meadow. Grandpa Joe settled into his old rocking chair behind her, the wood creaking softly with each slow rock. "You seem far away tonight, little spark," he said, his voice low and steady as a river. Ellie rested her chin on her knees. "I was thinking about the flag we raised at school today. Mrs. Tremblay said every star means something. But there are so many stars, Grandpa. How can one flag hold that much?" Grandpa Joe was quiet for a moment. The cicadas sang in the tall grass, and somewhere down the lane a dog barked once and then went still. "Come here," he said gently. Ellie stood and crossed to him, and he lifted her up onto his knee the way he had when she was very small. He smelled like wood shavings and peppermint, and his arms were warm around her. "You know how your grandmother's quilt is made?" he asked. Ellie nodded. She knew that quilt. It lived on the big bed upstairs, stitched from squares of old dresses and flannel shirts and a piece of blue ribbon from a county fair long ago. "Every scrap in that quilt came from somewhere different," Grandpa Joe said. "Some pieces are soft, some are rough. Some colors don't even seem to match. But your grandmother sewed them all together, and now on a cold night, that quilt keeps every single one of us warm." He tapped the railing gently. "That flag works the same way, Ellie. Every star is a place. Every stripe is a story. And together they make something strong enough to stand in any wind." Ellie looked out at the meadow, where the fireflies were still blinking their slow, patient signals to one another. She thought about that. A place. A story. She counted on her fingers, trying to remember how many stars were on the flag, but she lost track somewhere around seven. "Grandpa," she said, "did you ever meet someone from one of those places? From one of those stars?" He made a soft sound, something between a laugh and a hum. His rocking chair slowed. "Met a few," he said. "Worked alongside a few more. Your great-uncle Silas, now, he grew up on a mountain in Tennessee so steep the chickens had to hold on with both feet. And your grandmother's own mother came up from the Carolina lowlands, where the rice fields went on so far the sky looked small by comparison." Ellie giggled at the chickens, and Grandpa Joe smiled into the dark. "And then there was a man named Mr. Beaumont," he continued, his voice settling into that particular slowness it had when a real memory was coming. "I worked with him one summer when I was not much older than your father is now. We were laying fence posts on a farm just east of here. Big man, quiet man, hands like two catchers' mitts." The rocking chair creaked steadily. A moth bumped softly against the porch lantern. "He'd grown up in Louisiana, right at the edge of the bayou. Said when he was a boy he could hear alligators moving in the water at night, just the tiniest sound, like a log shifting." Grandpa Joe paused. "Different world than this porch, that bayou. Different trees, different sky, different everything." Ellie pulled her feet up and leaned back against his chest. "But he was still from here," she said quietly. "From the flag." Grandpa Joe nodded slowly above her head. "That's exactly right, little spark."
