Owen Wister's daring rescue in the Wyoming winter of 1885.

Read Along — Story Text
The year was 1885, and Owen Wister, a young writer from Philadelphia, had arrived in Wyoming to experience the rugged life of a cowboy. He was staying at a ranch near the town of Medicine Bow, where he had heard stories of cowboys struggling to survive the harsh winter. One day, a severe snowstorm hit the area, and a cowboy named Joe was reported stranded in the wilderness. The ranch hands were too afraid to venture out, but not Owen. He knew he had to act fast to save Joe's life. Owen saddled up his horse, a sturdy bay named Pedro, and set out into the blinding snow. The wind howled, and the snowdrifts reached up to his horse's belly, but Owen pressed on, his eyes fixed on the horizon. As they rode, the air grew colder, and the snow fell thicker, making it hard to see more than a few feet ahead. Owen's fingers were numb, and his face stung from the icy wind. But he didn't give up. After hours of riding, Owen spotted a dark shape in the distance. As they drew closer, he saw Joe huddled beneath a tree, his horse nowhere in sight. Owen quickly dismounted and rushed to Joe's side. The cowboy was shivering, his eyes glassy from the cold. Owen knew he had to get Joe back to the ranch quickly. He lifted Joe onto Pedro's back and climbed up behind him, holding him tight as they rode through the storm. The journey back was slow and treacherous, but Owen's determination kept them going. Finally, they saw the lights of the ranch in the distance. Owen yelled for help, and the ranch hands rushed out to assist. They quickly got Joe into a warm bed, where he could recover from his ordeal. Owen was hailed as a hero, not just for saving Joe's life but for showing the cowboys that even in the harshest of conditions, there was always hope. From that day on, Owen Wister was known as a true man of the frontier, and his story inspired many to face their own challenges with courage and compassion. The next morning, the storm had passed, leaving the world outside the ranch house wrapped in a thick, sparkling quilt of white. Owen sat beside Joe's bed, sipping a cup of strong black coffee that the cook, a wide woman named Bess, had pressed into his hands without a word. The fire in the hearth crackled and popped, throwing orange light across the rough wooden walls. Joe stirred beneath his blankets and opened one eye. His face was still pale, the tip of his nose an angry shade of red, but the glassy look was gone. He squinted at Owen for a long moment. "You're the fella from Philadelphia," Joe said at last, his voice coming out like gravel rolling in a tin cup. "That's right," Owen said, setting down his mug. "How are you feeling?" Joe considered this seriously, the way a man does when he has learned not to waste words. "Like a frozen creek thawing in April." He shifted under the covers and winced. "Slow and achy and not altogether pleasant." Owen laughed softly, and even Joe managed a crooked smile. Outside, the ranch hands had begun shoveling paths through the drifts, and Owen could hear the crunch and scrape of their shovels, the occasional low whistle when a man uncovered just how deep the snow had truly settled. Through the frosted window, he could see the mountains standing hard and clear against the blue morning sky, as if the storm had scoured them clean and held them up fresh for the world to admire. "My horse," Joe said suddenly, his brow drawing tight with worry. "Copper. I lost him out near the creek when the drift came up sudden." Owen leaned forward in his chair. "Then I suppose," he said quietly, "we had better go find him."
