✍️ Written by TrueTales Editorial Team 🎙️ Narrated by Lily Caldwell

Bessie Coleman became America's first Black female pilot against impossible odds.

Read Along — Story Text
The cotton fields of Texas stretched flat and wide under a burning sun. Bessie Coleman worked those rows as a girl, picking until her fingers ached. But whenever an airplane droned overhead, she would stop, shade her eyes, and watch until it disappeared into the blue. One day, she whispered to herself, I will be up there. The year was 1920, and America kept too many doors locked. No flight school in the United States would accept a Black woman. Some people told Bessie to give up. Bessie Coleman did not know how to give up. She made a bold decision. She would learn French, sail across the ocean, and train in France instead. She worked double shifts at a Chicago barbershop, saved every coin, and studied the language by lamplight late into the night. Her fingers, once rough from cotton, now turned the pages of French textbooks. In France, the instructors were strict and the open-cockpit planes were loud and wild. One classmate was killed during training. Bessie gripped the controls and kept flying. She studied loops, spins, and landings until the sky felt like home. On June 15, 1921, Bessie Coleman received her international pilot's license. She was the first Black woman in the world to earn one. When she flew back to America, crowds pressed forward to catch a glimpse of the woman who had soared past every barrier anyone had placed in her way. She barnstormed across the country, performing breathtaking stunts, and she always refused to perform for any crowd that would not allow Black and white spectators through the same gate. Bessie Coleman showed a generation of children something precious: no wall of injustice is tall enough to stop a brave heart with a dream. Reach for the sky, she seemed to say. The sky belongs to everyone.
