Read Along — Story Text
The night was cold and quiet in Boston town. Stars blinked above the dark harbor water. Samuel Adams stood on the wooden dock and looked out at three tall ships. Those ships carried chests of tea sent by the king. Samuel had a strong, steady voice. He believed every person deserved to be free. He believed no king far away should tell Americans what to do. He said, "We will not pay a tax on tea we never agreed to pay." Around him stood brave men and women of Boston. They called themselves the Sons of Liberty. That night they had a plan. They put on wool blankets and painted their faces to look like Mohawk warriors. They wanted to show the world they were Americans, not subjects of a distant throne. One by one they crept quietly onto the ships. The wood creaked under their boots. The cold wind blew off the water. They worked quickly and carefully, hauling heavy wooden chests up from below. Each chest was packed tight with tea. Splash. Splash. Splash. Into the dark harbor the chests went. Forty-two chests. Forty-three. Forty-four. The tea spread out across the water like a wide brown ribbon. Samuel watched and felt his heart pound. This was not easy. It was not without risk. But it was right. Americans deserved a voice. Americans deserved fairness. When it was done, the men walked home quietly. No one was hurt. Nothing else was touched. They had only wanted to be heard. Samuel looked up at the stars. He whispered a prayer of thanks. He knew this night would matter. He knew people would remember. And they always have. Now close your eyes, little one. You come from a brave and faithful people. Sleep well tonight.
