Read Along — Story Text
The Mayflower had been at sea for sixty-six days. The little ship groaned and pitched through walls of gray water. Belowdecks, men and women and children huddled together, soaked and cold and afraid. Among them was a young man named William Bradford. He had left everything he knew in England to find a place where people could worship God freely. Now, staring at the storm-raging sea, he wondered whether they would survive the crossing at all. But the Mayflower did not break. On a November morning in 1620, the clouds parted, and there it was — a long, wooded shore glittering under cold sunlight. America. Yet as the ship anchored in the harbor, trouble stirred. Some passengers argued. A few said they owed no one loyalty now that they had landed outside their original grant. Without law, without order, everything could fall apart before it even began. William Bradford gathered with the other leaders in the low, creaking cabin. Someone had to act. Someone had to believe that people could govern themselves with fairness and faith. So they wrote. By candlelight, in careful ink, they shaped a compact — a solemn agreement. They promised to work together, to make just laws, to seek the common good. They signed their names one by one, forty-one men in all, while the cold wind rocked the ship. Bradford later wrote that they were like small instruments in God's hands, planting the seeds of something that would outlast them all. And he was right. That document, the Mayflower Compact, was one of the first sparks of American self-government — born from faith, sealed with courage, and carried ashore on a freezing November day. Sleep well tonight. The brave keep their promises.
