The Kitchen-Table Week: A No-Prep Homeschool History Block

This is the block I run with four children across a nine-year age spread. The trick is one shared story and age-split responses: littles draw, middles write, olders argue. Nobody waits, nobody is bored, and the dishes can even get done.

What you need

  • One TrueTales story (the week's anchor)
  • Paper, pencils, any map
  • A phone call to a grandparent (Friday)

Session 1: Monday — The story

Listen (10-15 min)

Any story from this week's category. Everyone listens; nobody narrates yet. The only rule: when it ends, one full minute of silence before anyone speaks.

Do (15-20 min)

Each child answers ONE age-fitted prompt. Ages 4-6: draw the bravest moment. Ages 7-10: write three sentences the hero might put in a diary. Ages 11+: answer 'what was the hero's alternative — and why didn't they take it?'

Session 2: Wednesday — The map and the math

Listen (10-15 min)

Re-play the middle five minutes of Monday's story — just the journey or the crisis.

Do (15-20 min)

Trace the route on any map (a hand-drawn one counts). Olders compute the real arithmetic: miles per day, pounds of flour per month, dollars then vs now. Littles count wagon wheels.

Session 3: Friday — Tell it back

Listen (10-15 min)

No audio today. The children ARE the audio.

Do (15-20 min)

Each child retells the week's story to the youngest listener in the house — or to a grandparent on the phone. Retelling is the assessment; no worksheet can match it.

How you'll know it worked

If Friday's retelling includes a detail you yourself had forgotten, the week worked. It always does.
